E3·T2 — how we grade routesOgden Water is Halifax's best-kept trail running secret. The reservoir circuit is the warm-up; the moor above it is where the run actually starts.
A 13.2km circuit from Ogden Water above Halifax - reservoir paths giving way to open moorland on Ovenden Moor, with 285m of climbing and views across the Calder Valley.
The route
From the car park on Ogden Lane (HX2 8XZ), the route begins on the path circling Ogden Reservoir - a 19th-century supply reservoir now managed as a country park. The reservoir path is well-maintained and gives an immediate sense of the terrain: gritstone edges to the north, heather moorland above, and the Calder Valley dropping away to the south.
From the reservoir, the route climbs onto Ogden Moor and across the edge of Ovenden Moor to the east. The moor is managed heather ground - some sections on good tracks, others on rougher paths through the heather. The total ascent of 285m is spread across the climb from the reservoir (around 200m) to the moorland plateau, with a gradual descent back to the start.
The return brings you back along the southern edge of the reservoir and through the woodland fringe before the car park. A route that reads as a country park circuit on the map is something noticeably more interesting in practice.
South Pennines terrain
The South Pennines AONB between Halifax and Rochdale is systematically overlooked by trail runners who head straight for the Dales or Peak District. That oversight is your advantage. Ogden Water gets visitors but the moor above it is quiet - genuinely so on weekdays.
The terrain is classic South Pennines: gritstone underfoot, heather and bilberry on the high ground, and far-reaching views in clear conditions. To the north you can see the wind turbines on Ovenden Moor; to the south, the Calder Valley and the sprawl of Halifax below. Not scenic in the Dales sense, but honest landscape with real character.
Facilities
The visitor centre at Ogden Water has a small cafe selling drinks, snacks, and ice cream, plus toilet facilities. Parking is on Ogden Lane with a £1 charge. The site is managed by Calderdale Council and sees significant footfall - come early on summer weekends if you want the reservoir section to yourself. The moor above is reliably quieter regardless of season.
Grouse shooting takes place on the higher moorland sections - check for seasonal flags and respect shooting days (typically August to December).
Grouse shooting August to December on Ovenden Moor - watch for flags and shooting parties. Moorland paths can be boggy after rain. Some navigation needed on the upper sections in poor visibility.
