About Anglesey Coastal Path

Anglesey's coastline is officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in its entirety — the Coastal Path follows it all the way around, making this one of the most complete and varied coastal circuits in Britain. The island has a surprisingly rugged coast: sea cliffs, hidden coves, ancient burial chambers overlooking the sea, RSPB reserves, and the wide sands of Newborough Warren in the south-west.

For trail runners it is a three to five day challenge on excellent terrain — coastal paths, beach running and well-maintained waymarked sections throughout. The Holyhead Mountain section and the cliffs above South Stack RSPB reserve are the highlights. The route circuits the island, so start and finish anywhere.

The waymarking uses a shell symbol and is consistent throughout.

The route

Menai Bridge to Amlwch (~55 km, north-east coast): Starting from the Menai suspension bridge, past Beaumaris Castle, Red Wharf Bay and the limestone cliffs of the north coast to the copper-mining port of Amlwch.

Amlwch to Holyhead (~55 km, north-west coast): Cemlyn Bay, the RSPB reserve at Point Lynas, the dramatic sea cliffs approaching Holyhead. South Stack lighthouse — one of the finest viewpoints in Wales.

Holyhead to Newborough (~60 km, west and south coast): Around Holy Island, past the sand dunes and pinewoods of Newborough Forest and the wide beach at Llanddwyn Island.

Newborough to Menai Bridge (~44 km, south coast): Along the Menai Strait shoreline back to the start.

Getting there & logistics

Anglesey is well-connected: Holyhead has direct trains from London Euston and connections to Manchester and Birmingham. Llanfairpwll and Bangor (Gwynedd, just across the strait) have regular rail services.

As a circuit, start anywhere. Menai Bridge, Beaumaris or Holyhead are the most convenient starting points. Accommodation throughout in coastal towns and villages.

Best time: April to October. The cliff sections can be exposed in winter.

Safety

The South Stack and Holyhead Mountain sections involve unfenced sea cliffs. The tidal causeway to Llanddwyn Island should be checked before crossing.

In an emergency on the coast: call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. Holyhead Coastguard covers Anglesey. Pre-register SMS 999.
