Annandale Way
The Annandale Way is a 90 km waymarked trail through Dumfries and Galloway from Moffat in the Southern Uplands to the Solway Firth at Annan — following the River Annan through pastoral farmland and market towns.
About Annandale Way
The Annandale Way follows the Annan valley from its headwaters near Moffat in the Southern Uplands to the tidal flats of the Solway Firth. It is a gentler Scotland's Great Trail than many — no serious mountain terrain, well-waymarked, and passing through a landscape of working farms, market towns and river meadows.
For trail runners it is a good one to two day challenge on easy, fast terrain. The Moffat Hills section at the start provides the only real climbing; the rest of the route is riverside and valley running. Lochmaben and its castles, the Devil's Beef Tub viewpoint near Moffat, and the Solway shore at Annan are the main highlights.
The route
Moffat to Beattock (~18 km): Gradual descent from the Southern Uplands. Views back to the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall. Beattock village and the A74(M) crossing.
Beattock to Lochmaben (~35 km): Open Annandale farmland. Lochmaben Castle (royal residence of Robert the Bruce) and the lochans are a highlight.
Lochmaben to Annan (~37 km): Through Lockerbie and south to the Solway coast. The final section crosses the wide farmland of the lower Annan valley.
