About Bala Skyline

Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is the largest natural lake in Wales — 6 km long and sitting in a valley surrounded by rolling moorland and the higher ridges of the Aran mountains. The Bala Skyline circles these surrounding hills in a demanding circuit that takes in Aran Fawddwy (905 m, the highest summit in Wales outside Snowdonia), the Berwyn fringe and the moorland above the Dee valley.

At 47 km with around 2,500 m of ascent, it is a solid single-day challenge on varied terrain — from clear ridge paths to more complex moorland navigation on the Berwyn section.

The route

From Bala town: south to the Aran ridge (Aran Fawddwy 905 m, Aran Benllyn 885 m). North along the Berwyn fringe above the Dee valley. East across the moorland above Llandrillo. Return along the northern shore of Llyn Tegid.

Getting there & logistics

Base: Bala. Bus from Dolgellau and Corwen. Car parking in the town centre.

Best time: May to September.

Safety
