About Cairngorm Munros

The Cairngorms contain the highest, largest and most arctic mountain terrain in Britain. The central plateau sits above 1,000 m for miles in every direction, with Ben Macdui (1,309 m, the second highest mountain in Britain) at its centre. Beyond the main plateau, the park includes the Monadhliath, Glen Shee Munros and the Lochnagar group.

A continuous round of all 55 Cairngorm Munros is a major expedition — typically taking seven to fourteen days for experienced mountain runners carrying camping equipment. The terrain is serious: featureless in mist, Arctic in winter, and with long approaches to every hill group.

The round has no fixed start point or route order — most runners plan their own logical linking sequence to minimise backtracking.

The route

The 55 Munros divide into several natural groups:

The main plateau: Ben Macdui, Cairn Gorm, Braeriach, Cairn Toul, The Sgor an Lochain Uaine — these four are the highest and most central.

The Lairig Ghru approaches: Beinn Bhrotain, Monadh Mor, Tom Buidhe.

Eastern Cairngorms: Beinn a'Bhuird, Ben Avon (the most remote).

Southern ranges: The Glen Shee Munros (Glas Maol, Carn Bhinnein etc.) and Lochnagar group.

Getting there & logistics

Base: Aviemore or Braemar — the two main gateways. Both have train/bus connections.

Most runners use wild camping (legal in Scotland) or the mountain bothies maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association. Cairn Gorm ski area provides summer vehicle access to 600 m.

Best time: June to August for best conditions. The plateau can have snow until June.

Safety

The Cairngorm plateau is the most dangerous terrain in Britain in winter — conditions can match the Alps. Even in summer, weather can deteriorate rapidly to white-out. A PLB is essential. Navigation skills at a high level are required throughout.

In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. Cairngorm MRT. Pre-register SMS 999.
