About Ceredigion Coast Path

The Ceredigion coast is one of Wales's most unspoilt — cliff-top paths above dramatic sea stacks and coves, Cardigan Bay (an important harbour porpoise habitat), and the genteel seaside towns of New Quay and Aberaeron. The coast path runs the full length of the county from Cardigan in the south to Aberystwyth in the north.

For trail runners it is a two to three day challenge on well-maintained coastal paths. The Heritage Coast section between Cardigan and Llangrannog is the most dramatic; the northern section towards Aberystwyth is gentler. Dolphin and porpoise watching from the cliff tops is a bonus.

The route

Cardigan to Llangrannog (~30 km): The best section — steep cliffs, dramatic headlands, St Dogmaels.

Llangrannog to New Quay (~25 km): Past the popular beaches of Tresaith and Penbryn.

New Quay to Aberystwyth (~66 km): Through Aberaeron and the gentler northern coast.

Getting there & logistics

Start: Cardigan. Bus from Fishguard and Carmarthen.

Finish: Aberystwyth. Train on the Cambrian line.

Best time: April to October.

Safety

The Heritage Coast sections have unfenced cliff edges. In an emergency: call 999 or 112 and ask for Coastguard. Good mobile signal for most of the route.
