About Cheviot Stroller

The Cheviot Hills form the border between England and Scotland in Northumberland — a vast moorland plateau of peat hags, cotton grass and heather, with The Cheviot (815 m) at their highest point. The Stroller circuit takes in the main summits from Wooler or Kirk Yetholm in a demanding moorland challenge.

The terrain is similar to the Dark Peak: vast, featureless and navigationally demanding in poor conditions. The Pennine Way follows the Border Ridge on its northern section, providing a useful path on the highest ground.

The route

From Wooler or Harthope: ascent of The Cheviot (815 m) via the summit path. North along the border ridge — Windy Gyle (619 m), The Schil. Return south via the eastern Cheviot slopes and the College Valley.

Getting there & logistics

Base: Wooler, Northumberland. Bus from Alnwick and Newcastle.
