About Clyde Walkway

The Clyde Walkway starts at the heart of Scotland's largest city and traces the river upstream through Glasgow's old industrial heartland, past former shipyards and steel works, into the Clyde valley orchards and finally to New Lanark — the model industrial village built by Robert Owen in the 1790s, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Falls of Clyde immediately above New Lanark are the dramatic finish.

For trail runners it is a one to two day challenge on well-maintained riverside paths, mixing urban running through Glasgow with increasingly beautiful river valley scenery.

The route

Glasgow to Motherwell (~30 km): Through the city and former industrial landscape. Bothwell Castle ruins are a highlight.

Motherwell to Lanark (~34 km): The Clyde valley orchards — apple and pear growing country, one of Scotland's most unusual agricultural landscapes. New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde at the finish.

Getting there & logistics

Start: Glasgow city centre. Extensive rail and bus connections.

Finish: New Lanark. Bus to Lanark; train to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Best time: Year-round.

Safety

The Clyde Walkway is a low-hazard route — riverside paths with good mobile signal throughout. The Falls of Clyde have unfenced viewpoints near fast-flowing water — take care. In an emergency: call 999 or 112.
