About Dartmoor 600s

Dartmoor's high moorland plateau contains a surprising number of summits above 600 m — concentrated on the northern moor around High Willhays and Yes Tor. The Dartmoor 600s visits all of them in a continuous run across some of the most featureless and navigationally demanding moorland in England.

The Ministry of Defence firing ranges cover much of the northern high ground — checking firing times is essential before venturing onto the high moor. High Willhays (621 m) is the highest point in England south of the Pennines.

The challenge has no official route or keeper — it is a personal fell-running objective.

The route

The main cluster of 600 m summits is on the northern Dartmoor plateau: High Willhays (621 m), Yes Tor (619 m), Row Tor, West Mill Tor and Brown Willy. A secondary cluster south of Princetown includes Ryder's Hill and Penn Beacon on the southern moor.

Most runners approach from Okehampton (check range access) or from Dartmeet on the eastern fringe.

Getting there & logistics

Start: Okehampton (seasonal train from Exeter) or Dartmeet (bus from Ashburton). Check MOD firing range access at dartmoor.gov.uk before setting out.

Best time: May to September. The northern moor is very boggy in winter.

Safety

The northern Dartmoor moor is featureless in mist — navigation by compass is essential. The MOD ranges are active — do not proceed if red flags are flying. In an emergency: call 999 or 112. Dartmoor Search & Rescue Association (multiple teams). Pre-register SMS 999.
