Epynt Way
The Epynt Way is an 80 km circular route around Mynydd Epynt in mid-Wales — the vast military training range above Brecon that is periodically open to the public, giving access to wild moorland rarely seen by civilian visitors.
This route has no official waymarking. Serious navigation experience is required — do not rely on GPS alone. Carry OS 1:25,000 maps and study the line before you go.
About Epynt Way
Mynydd Epynt is a 40,000-acre moorland plateau used as a military training area since the Second World War. The villages that once dotted its surface were cleared and their residents relocated in 1940. The Epynt Way circuits the perimeter of this plateau on rights of way that remain accessible, with occasional military range closure days.
For trail runners it is a circular route on good tracks and open moorland — the access roads across the plateau give fast running surfaces and the views across the Brecon Beacons and mid-Wales are exceptional. The sense of empty space is unusual for Wales.
The route
The circuit follows the perimeter of the military range on bridleways and minor roads — Upper Chapel, Garth, Llanafan Fawr, Tirabad and Builth Wells are the main access points around the circuit.
