About Gower Way

The Gower Peninsula was the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty designated in Britain (1956) — a compact tongue of land west of Swansea with spectacular sea cliffs, sandy beaches and limestone heath. The Gower Way crosses the peninsula from the famous Rhossili Bay in the south-west to the Swansea fringe in the north-east.

For trail runners it is a strong one-day challenge on varied terrain — coastal cliff paths, limestone ridge, heathland and wooded valleys. Rhossili Bay (regularly voted one of Britain's best beaches) and the Worm's Head headland are the starting highlights.

The route

Rhossili to Penmaen (~25 km): The coastal section — Worm's Head tidal causeway (check tides), the cliff path above Port Eynon, Three Cliffs Bay.

Penmaen to Penlle'r Castell (~31 km): Inland over the limestone ridge and through the Gower woodland to the finish near Loughor.

Getting there & logistics

Start: Rhossili. Bus from Swansea (seasonal).

Finish: Loughor/Swansea area. Bus and train connections.

Best time: April to October.

Safety

The Worm's Head causeway is tidal — check tide times before crossing. The cliff paths are unfenced. In an emergency: call 999 or 112 and ask for Coastguard. Pre-register SMS 999.
