About Helvellyn Dodds Round
The Helvellyn range is a continuous north-south ridge for over 20 km — from Clough Head in the north to Dollywagon Pike in the south, with Helvellyn (950 m) at its centre. The Dodds Round circuits the full range from a Threlkeld or Patterdale base, taking in all the significant summits and the famous Striding Edge ridge approach to Helvellyn.
At 39 km with around 2,500 m of ascent, it is a demanding but achievable single-day challenge for fell runners. Striding Edge is the most technically demanding section.
The route
From Threlkeld or Patterdale: north to Clough Head via the Dodds ridge (Watson's Dodd, Great Dodd, Stybarrow Dodd). South to Helvellyn via Raise and White Side. Striding Edge or Swirral Edge descent to Patterdale. Return north via Glenridding.
