Inn Way to the Peak District
The Inn Way to the Peak District is a 131 km circular route through the Peak District linking traditional country inns at Castleton, Bamford, Grindleford, Bakewell, Youlgreave, Hartington and Edale — a circuit crossing both the Dark and White Peak.
This route has no official waymarking. Serious navigation experience is required — do not rely on GPS alone. Carry OS 1:25,000 maps and study the line before you go.
About Inn Way to the Peak District
The Peak District Inn Way circles both the Dark Peak gritstone moors and the White Peak limestone plateau in a route designed around traditional country pubs at roughly day-walk intervals. The circuit crosses Mam Tor and the Great Ridge, the Hope valley, the Derwent edges, Chatsworth parkland, the limestone dales and Edale — covering the best of both Peak District landscapes in one circular route.
For trail runners it is a fast two to three day challenge combining some of the most popular trail-running terrain in England.
The route
Castleton → Bamford → Grindleford → Bakewell → Youlgreave → Hartington → Edale → Castleton: The circuit visits Mam Tor ridge, Stanage Edge, Chatsworth, Bradford Dale, Dove Dale approaches and the Edale valley.
Getting there & logistics
Base: Castleton. Bus from Sheffield and Bakewell. Edale has a train station on the Sheffield–Manchester Hope Valley line.
Best time: Year-round. The Peak District is accessible twelve months a year.
Safety
The Kinder Scout and Dark Peak sections require navigation skills. The Dove Dale and limestone sections are straightforward. In an emergency: call 999 or 112. Edale MRT covers the northern Dark Peak. Pre-register SMS 999.
