About Kinder Dozen

Kinder Scout is the highest point in the Peak District at 636 m, and the moorland plateau it sits on is one of the most historically significant landscapes in British walking and running — the site of the 1932 Mass Trespass that eventually won the public right to roam on open access land.

The Kinder Dozen links 12 summits on and around the Kinder plateau in a circuit that gives a thorough exploration of the Dark Peak's finest ground. The route takes in the Kinder edges — a series of gritstone outcrops around the plateau rim — as well as the plateau itself (boggy, pathless and navigationally demanding) and the outlying summits of Mam Tor, Lose Hill and Rushup Edge.

For trail runners the Dozen is a good half-day to full-day challenge depending on pace and conditions. The terrain is heavier than the mileage suggests — expect slow progress across the plateau in wet conditions.

The route

From Edale: over Ringing Roger and the Kinder eastern edge, across the plateau to Kinder Low (633 m) and Kinder Scout summit (636 m). Then the western and northern edges — Noe Stool, Grindslow Knoll, the Wool Packs. Descend to Snake Pass and return via the eastern moors, taking in Lose Hill (476 m), Mam Tor (517 m) and Rushup Edge.

Exact order varies — see the GoFar website for the standard circuit.

Getting there & logistics

Start from Edale village — train station on the Hope Valley line from Sheffield and Manchester. The Nag's Head pub in Edale is a popular finish point. Car parking in the village pay car park.

Safety

Kinder Plateau is featureless in mist and requires compass navigation. In winter conditions the plateau edges can be icy and the peat groughs dangerous. In an emergency: call 999, ask for Edale Mountain Rescue Team. Pre-register SMS 999 (text 'register' to 999).
