About Lake District 3000s

The Lake District 3000s links England's highest ground in one continuous mountain challenge. The seven summits over 3,000 ft are spread across three groups: Skiddaw (931 m) and Blencathra (868 m, often included) in the north; Helvellyn (950 m) with Nethermost Pike and Catstye Cam in the centre; and the Scafell group — Scafell Pike (978 m, England's highest point), Scafell (964 m), Broad Crag and Ill Crag — in the south.

The challenge involves roughly 72 km and 5,500 m of ascent in a continuous mountain traverse. Most runners use support crews at Threlkeld (after Skiddaw/Blencathra), Dunmail Raise (after the Helvellyn group) and Wasdale Head (before the Scafell group). Unlike the Bob Graham Round, the 3000s has no fixed route — runners choose their own lines between groups.

It is a good stepping stone challenge for those building towards a full Bob Graham Round attempt.

The route

Northern group: Skiddaw (931 m) from Keswick, with optional addition of Blencathra via Hall's Fell ridge. Descend to Threlkeld.

Central group: Clough Head, the Dodds, Helvellyn (950 m), Nethermost Pike, Catstye Cam if included. Descend to Dunmail Raise.

Southern group: Fairfield or a direct line south, then the Langdale Pikes approach, Bowfell, Esk Pike, the Scafell group — Great End, Broad Crag, Ill Crag, Scafell Pike (978 m) and the scramble across Mickledore to Scafell (964 m). Finish at Wasdale Head or back to Keswick depending on preference.

Getting there & logistics

Based on Keswick for the start. Use a support crew or car shuttle to reach Wasdale Head for the finish, or plan a return to Keswick via the Corridor Route.

Access to all support points by road: Threlkeld (A66), Dunmail Raise (A591), Wasdale Head (minor road from Gosforth). Wasdale Head accommodation is limited — book the campsite or inn well ahead.

Best time: May to September. The traverse involves sustained high mountain ground — carry full kit.

Safety

The crossing between Scafell Pike and Scafell via Mickledore is a technical scramble on loose rock. In wet conditions or with a heavy pack, it requires care. Do not attempt the direct descent if not confident on exposed rock — Lord's Rake is a longer but safer alternative.

In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. Keswick MRT (north), Langdale/Ambleside MRT (centre/south), Wasdale MRT (Scafell group). Pre-register SMS 999 (text 'register' to 999).
