Llŷn Coastal Path
The Llŷn Coastal Path is a 135 km route around the coastline of the Llŷn Peninsula — the arm of north-west Wales that reaches into the Irish Sea towards Ireland, with sea cliffs, sandy coves and views to Bardsey Island and the mountains of Snowdonia.
This route has no official waymarking. Serious navigation experience is required — do not rely on GPS alone. Carry OS 1:25,000 maps and study the line before you go.
About Llŷn Coastal Path
The Llŷn Peninsula (pronounced "Hlin") is one of Wales's most distinctive landscapes — a long arm of ancient land reaching south-west into the Irish Sea, with a rugged northern coast and a gentler southern shore. The coastal path circles the peninsula on cliff-top paths, coastal tracks and quiet lanes in a complete circumnavigation.
For trail runners it is a two to three day challenge on generally well-maintained coastal terrain. The northern coast between Nefyn and Aberdaron is the finest section — dramatic sea cliffs, headlands and the approach to the tip of the peninsula at Mynydd Mawr. The views to Bardsey Island throughout the final section are the atmospheric highlight.
The route
Caernarfon to Nefyn (~60 km, south coast): The gentler southern shore, through the market town of Pwllheli.
Nefyn to Aberdaron (~40 km, north coast): The finest section. Sea cliffs, headlands, Porth Oer (the Whistling Sands) and the pilgrim church at Aberdaron.
Aberdaron to Caernarfon (~35 km, return): Along the southern shore back to the Menai Strait.
Getting there & logistics
