About Meirionnydd Round

The Meirionnydd Round covers the mountain terrain of historic Meirionnydd (now Gwynedd and northern Ceredigion) — the Rhinogydd, the Aran range and Cadair Idris. These are quieter, rougher mountains than the northern Snowdon and Glyderau ranges, with more pathless terrain and a wilder character.

At around 70 km with approximately 4,500 m of ascent, it is a strong single-day or overnight challenge for experienced mountain runners. Navigation is essential on the Rhinogydd — the scramble-covered moorland between the Harlech coast and the Mawddach is trackless and complex.

The route

Rhinogydd (~25 km): The roughest section. Rhinog Fawr (720 m), Rhinog Fach, Y Llethr — pathless quartzite and heather. The most technically demanding navigation of the round.

Aran ridge (~20 km): Aran Fawddwy (905 m, the highest summit in Wales outside Snowdonia) and Aran Benllyn — a long, clear ridge with good visibility.

Cadair Idris (~25 km): Penygadair (893 m) — approached via the southern Minffordd path. Long descent to the Mawddach.

Getting there & logistics

Base: Dolgellau — the natural hub of Meirionnydd, with good facilities and transport links. Bus from Machynlleth and Barmouth.

Best time: May to September.

Safety

The Rhinogydd are the most navigationally demanding section — rocky, pathless, and confusing in mist. Cadair Idris has steep northern cliffs. In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. Aberdyfi MRT covers Cadair Idris. Pre-register SMS 999.
