Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path
The Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path is a 209 km National Trail from Knettishall Heath in Suffolk to Cromer on the north Norfolk coast — following a Roman road across Breckland then the finest section of the Norfolk Coast AONB.
About Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path
The Peddars Way is a remarkable survivor — a Roman road laid in the first century AD that still runs in an almost perfectly straight line for 75 km across west Norfolk. The National Trail follows it north from Knettishall Heath to the coast, then turns east along the Norfolk Coast Path through the internationally important nature reserves and harbours of the north Norfolk coast.
For trail runners it is a two to three day route combining very different character: the quiet, arrow-straight Peddars Way through Breckland and west Norfolk farmland, and the dramatic coastal section past Holme, Brancaster, Blakeney Point, Cley and Sheringham.
The route
Knettishall Heath to Holme (~75 km, Peddars Way): Dead-straight Roman road across Breckland and west Norfolk. Sedge fen, plantation and arable farmland.
Holme to Cromer (~134 km, Norfolk Coast Path): The outstanding coastal section — saltmarsh, sand dunes, Holkham beach, Blakeney Point, Cley Marshes (one of Britain's best birdwatching sites).
Getting there & logistics
Start: Knettishall Heath. Bus from Thetford (train from London Liverpool Street and Cambridge).
Finish: Cromer. Train to Norwich (connections to London).
Best time: Year-round. The coast path is rewarding in winter.
Safety
The coast path sections cross saltmarsh and beach where paths can be unclear — check tides near coastal sections. In an emergency: call 999 or 112. For coastal incidents ask for Coastguard. Good mobile signal throughout.
