About River Ayr Way

The River Ayr Way traces Scotland's most completely followed river — from its source at Glenbuck reservoir, through Muirkirk (the former ironworks town), Catrine, Mauchline (Robert Burns's village) and Ayr to the sea. It is Scotland's first waymarked source-to-sea route and passes through the heart of Burns Country in central Ayrshire.

For trail runners it is a one to two day challenge on good riverside paths and farm tracks. The upper section through former coalfield country has a rugged, post-industrial character; the lower section through Burns Country is gentler and historically rich.

The route

Glenbuck to Muirkirk (~15 km): The moorland upper section. Glenbuck reservoir and the former ironworks landscape.

Muirkirk to Mauchline (~30 km): Through the Ayrshire foothills. Mauchline — Gavin Hamilton's house, the Burns Memorial.

Mauchline to Ayr (~26 km): Down the lower Ayr valley to the coast.

Getting there & logistics

Start: Glenbuck. Bus from Muirkirk (limited service); better approached by car.

Finish: Ayr. Frequent trains from Glasgow Central.

Best time: Year-round.

Safety

The upper moorland section near Glenbuck is the most remote. Good mobile signal along most of the lower route. In an emergency: call 999 or 112.
