About South Wales Traverse

The South Wales Traverse crosses the breadth of south Wales from the English border to the Atlantic coast — through the Brecon Beacons national park, the former coalfield valleys and the Gower AONB. It is a route of contrasts: mountain moorland, post-industrial valleys with their own drama, and the limestone coast of Gower which is Outstanding Natural Beauty.

At around 80 km with approximately 2,500 m of ascent, it is a strong two-day challenge or a very demanding single-day push. The Brecon Beacons section gives the highest ground; the Gower coast provides the most scenic finish.

The route

Abergavenny to Brecon (~40 km): Through the Black Mountains eastern edge and over the central Beacons — Pen y Fan (886 m) as the high point.

Brecon to the Valleys: Down from the Beacons into the Usk and Taff valleys.

Valleys to Swansea to Gower (~40 km): Through Neath and the M4 corridor, then west to the Gower peninsula and the limestone coastal path.

Getting there & logistics

Start: Abergavenny. Train from Cardiff and Newport.

Finish: Swansea or the Gower. Swansea has regular trains to Cardiff.

Best time: April to October.

Safety

The Brecon Beacons section requires mountain skills — the central plateau is exposed and Pen y Fan can be very cold and windy. In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue (Beacons) or Coastguard (Gower coast). Brecon MRT. Pre-register SMS 999.
