Three Lochs Way
The Three Lochs Way is a 55 km waymarked route from Balloch on Loch Lomond to Inveruglas — linking three Argyll lochs (Loch Lomond, Gare Loch and Loch Long) in a scenic circuit through the hills above the Clyde estuary.
About Three Lochs Way
The Three Lochs Way connects three sea lochs and freshwater lochs on the western shore of Loch Lomond — making a circuit through the hills above the Clyde estuary that is accessible from Glasgow but feels genuinely remote. The route passes through Helensburgh, Garelochhead and Arrochar, climbing between the lochs on forest tracks and hill paths.
For trail runners it is a one to two day challenge on good terrain — the forest sections provide fast running and the loch-side sections give excellent views. The Arrochar Alps visible to the north provide a dramatic backdrop.
The route
Balloch to Helensburgh (~18 km): Along the western Loch Lomond shore and through the Loch Lomond hills to the Clyde coast at Helensburgh.
Helensburgh to Arrochar (~22 km): Over the Gare Loch hills and along Loch Long.
Arrochar to Inveruglas (~15 km): Through the Rest and Be Thankful approach to the eastern Loch Lomond shore.
Getting there & logistics
Start: Balloch. Train from Glasgow Queen Street.
Finish: Inveruglas. Bus to Arrochar; train to Glasgow.
Best time: Year-round. Forest paths drain quickly.
Safety
The hill sections between the lochs are the most remote. Mobile signal can be poor in the forest. In an emergency: call 999 or 112. Good rescue access along most of the route.
