About Welsh Classical Round

The Welsh Classical Round takes the Welsh 3000s concept and extends it into a comprehensive tour of Snowdonia's finest mountain terrain — adding the Moelwynion and Cadair Idris to the standard Welsh 3000s peaks for a round that covers all of Snowdonia's significant mountain groups.

At over 100 km with approximately 8,000 m of ascent, it is one of the most demanding challenge rounds in Wales — harder than the Welsh 3000s, comparable in scale to a long Lake District round. The technical Crib Goch ridge, the Carneddau plateau navigation and the remote Moelwynion make it a serious proposition for even experienced mountain runners.

The route

The round extends the Welsh 3000s (Snowdon, Glyderau, Carneddau) with additional sections:

Moelwynion (~20 km extension): After the Carneddau, south over Moel Siabod, Cnicht and the Moelwyn group.

Cadair Idris (~25 km south of the main group): The southern anchor — Penygadair (893 m) accessed from Dolgellau or the Minffordd path, requiring a long approach from the Moelwynion.

Getting there & logistics

Start options: Llanberis or Pen-y-Pass. Support crew access at Ogwen (midway), Capel Curig, Blaenau Ffestiniog (Moelwynion section), and Dolgellau (Cadair Idris).

Best time: June to July for maximum daylight and best mountain conditions.

Safety

Crib Goch is a serious scramble in any conditions and dangerous in ice. The Carneddau plateau is navigationally demanding in poor visibility. The Moelwynion and Cadair approaches add isolated mountain terrain. A PLB is recommended. In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. Multiple North Wales MRT teams. Pre-register SMS 999.
