E3·T4 — how we grade routesMallerstang is proper wilderness — the Settle-Carlisle railway visible far below, Ais Gill summit nearby, and a summit plateau that feels a long way from anywhere.
A remote fell run to Wild Boar Fell at 708m via the dramatic Mallerstang valley — one of the loneliest and most atmospheric corners of the Yorkshire Dales.
The route
Mallerstang is the valley of the upper Eden, flanked by Mallerstang Edge and Wild Boar Fell. The route follows the valley road before ascending steeply onto the fell, following the escarpment north to the summit at 708m.
Wild Boar Fell
The summit is a flat-topped plateau with extensive views into the Eden Valley and Cumbria. The Settle-Carlisle railway is visible threading through the valley far below — the famous Ribblehead Viaduct is just visible to the south on a clear day.
The descent
Descend south via the western edge back to the start. The route is remote — allow extra time and carry navigation equipment.
Remote and exposed — full navigation equipment essential. No shelter on the summit plateau. The ascent is steep and grassy, slippery when wet.
