Three waterfalls and a medieval castle — this is the route for days when you want something beautiful without working too hard for it.
An accessible Wensleydale loop connecting the three tiers of Aysgarth Falls with views up to the ruins of Bolton Castle, along riverside paths and field tracks.
The route
Starting at the National Park car park above Aysgarth Falls, the route visits all three tiers of the falls — Upper, Middle and Lower — before following the River Ure downstream and cutting across fields to Bolton Castle.
Bolton Castle
Bolton Castle (open to visitors, entry charge) was built in 1399 and held Mary Queen of Scots for six months. Even from the outside, the views from the castle approach over Wensleydale are excellent.
The return
The return follows field paths back to Aysgarth, with the falls audible long before you reach them. Total circuit is around 10km with minimal ascent.
Riverside path can be slippery near the falls. Stepping stones impassable in spate.
