Brecon Beacons Traverse
The Brecon Beacons Traverse is a demanding 60 km route across the full width of the Brecon Beacons National Park — from Abergavenny to Sennybridge via the Black Mountains, the central Beacons ridge and Fforest Fawr.
This route has no official waymarking. Serious navigation experience is required — do not rely on GPS alone. Carry OS 1:25,000 maps and study the line before you go.
About Brecon Beacons Traverse
The Brecon Beacons Traverse crosses all four of the national park's distinct mountain areas in a west-to-east (or east-to-west) route: the Black Mountains near Abergavenny, the central Beacons with Pen y Fan, the Fforest Fawr moorland, and the Black Mountain (Mynydd Du) in the west.
At around 60 km with approximately 3,500 m of ascent, it is a strong single-day or overnight challenge. The terrain varies considerably: the Black Mountains are broad, grassy ridges with good paths; Pen y Fan is popular and well-trodden; Fforest Fawr and the Black Mountain are wilder and less visited. Navigation skills are needed on the western sections.
The route
Abergavenny to Hay Bluff (Black Mountains, ~25 km): The opening section on the long ridges of the Black Mountains. Abergavenny to the Offa's Dyke path and east ridge of the Black Mountains to Hay Bluff.
Pen y Fan area (central Beacons, ~15 km): Over Pen y Fan (886 m) and Corn Du — the most visited peaks in Wales south of Snowdonia.
Fforest Fawr to Sennybridge (~20 km): Across the less-visited western section. Navigation required on Mynydd Du in poor conditions.
Getting there & logistics
