About Calderdale Way

The Calderdale Way circles the upper Calder valley on the South Pennine moors above Halifax and Hebden Bridge — a round of the dark gritstone moorland, packhorse roads and dramatic valley sides that surround one of the most characterful parts of West Yorkshire. Hebden Bridge is the cultural hub; the moors above it are surprisingly wild for their proximity to the urban north.

For trail runners it is a one to two day challenge on excellent terrain — firm tracks, moorland paths and occasional road sections. The Heptonstall moorland above Hebden Bridge is the finest section. The circuit format allows starting anywhere along the route.

The route

The circuit is typically divided into two roughly equal halves. North section: Through Midgley, Sowerby Bridge and the high moor above Ripponden — rough Pennine country with excellent views south to the hills. South section: Through Cragg Vale, Mytholmroyd and the moorland above Hebden Bridge — classic South Pennines terrain with gritstone edges and heather.

Getting there & logistics

Base: Hebden Bridge — excellent rail connections (Leeds–Manchester line), good accommodation and a deservedly popular town with excellent food.

Best time: Year-round. The South Pennines drain reasonably well but can be boggy in wet periods.

Safety

The Calderdale Way is moderate terrain — never far from habitation. The high moor sections above Hebden Bridge can be misty and disorienting. Good mobile signal throughout. In an emergency: call 999 or 112.
