About Freeman Round

The Freeman Round takes a selection of the finest fells in the Eastern Lake District — the high ridges above Patterdale, Glenridding and the Ullswater valley — in a continuous circuit. It focuses on the area between Helvellyn (950 m), High Street (828 m) and the Kentmere Horseshoe, combining the most popular fells with some quieter ground on the High Street Roman road ridge.

At around 100 km with approximately 5,500 m of ascent, it is comparable in difficulty to the classic Lake District rounds. Like them, it is done by fell runners rather than walkers. A 24-hour target is the standard challenge.

The route

Patterdale to Helvellyn: The Striding Edge approach to Helvellyn — the most dramatic ridge in the eastern Lakes. South over Dollywaggon Pike and Fairfield.

Fairfield to High Street: Down to Kirkstone Pass and up the long Roman road ridge to High Street (828 m). The most runnable section.

High Street to Kentmere Horseshoe: South to Mardale Ill Bell, Harter Fell and the Kentmere ridge.

Return to Patterdale: Over the Angletarn Pikes and back down the Patterdale valley.

Getting there & logistics

Start/finish: Patterdale or Glenridding. Bus from Penrith (train to London and Scotland). The Ullswater Steamer provides an alternative return.

Best time: June to September.

Safety

Striding Edge and Swirral Edge on Helvellyn are the most technical sections — narrow ridges with drops on both sides, potentially icy in winter. In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. Patterdale MRT. Pre-register SMS 999.
