Knoydart 7
The Knoydart 7 visits all seven Munros in the Knoydart peninsula — one of the most remote and demanding mountain challenges in Scotland, accessible only by ferry or a two-day walk across the Rough Bounds.
This route has no official waymarking. Serious navigation experience is required — do not rely on GPS alone. Carry OS 1:25,000 maps and study the line before you go.
About Knoydart 7
Knoydart is the last true wilderness in Britain — a peninsula on the west coast of the Highlands with no road access from the rest of Scotland. You reach it by ferry from Mallaig or by walking in across the Rough Bounds from Kinloch Hourn, a two-day journey in itself. Once there, the seven Munros of the peninsula (Ladhar Bheinn, Luinne Bheinn, Meall Buidhe and the Knoydart group) await in genuinely arctic-feeling terrain.
The Knoydart 7 is typically done in a two to three day expedition from the village of Inverie — the only settlement on the peninsula, accessible by ferry from Mallaig. Camping or the Old Forge pub (the most remote pub in mainland Britain) provide the overnight options.
Ladhar Bheinn (1,020 m) is widely regarded as the most beautiful mountain in Scotland.
The route
Inverie base: Ladhar Bheinn (1,020 m) is the obvious first or last peak from Inverie — the Coire Dhorrcail approach is magnificent. Luinne Bheinn (939 m) and Meall Buidhe (946 m) form a natural pair. The northern Knoydart Munros require a longer approach from Barrisdale Bay on the north coast.
Getting there & logistics
Access: Western Isles Cruises ferry from Mallaig (train from Fort William on the West Highland Line). Ferry runs several times daily in summer, limited in winter.
Accommodation: Inverie has a bunkhouse, self-catering cottages and the Old Forge pub. Wild camping is available throughout.
Best time: June to August. The Knoydart terrain is very wet year-round.
Safety
Knoydart is as remote as it gets in mainland Britain. Rescue access is by helicopter or by boat — response times can be very long. A PLB is essential. In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. Lochaber MRT. Pre-register SMS 999.
