Langdale Horseshoe Extended
The Langdale Horseshoe Extended is a 32 km fell-running circuit extending the classic Langdale Horseshoe to include Bowfell, Crinkle Crags and Pike o'Blisco — a comprehensive round of the Langdale fells from the Old Dungeon Ghyll.
This route has no official waymarking. Serious navigation experience is required — do not rely on GPS alone. Carry OS 1:25,000 maps and study the line before you go.
About Langdale Horseshoe Extended
The Langdale Horseshoe is one of the classic Lake District ridge walks — Pike o'Stickle, Harrison Stickle and the Langdale Pikes. The Extended version adds the full southern circuit: Bowfell (902 m), Three Tarns, Crinkle Crags (859 m) and Pike o'Blisco, making a complete round of the entire Langdale basin.
At 32 km with around 2,800 m of ascent, it is a demanding full-day fell run from the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel.
The route
From Old Dungeon Ghyll: up Stickle Ghyll to the Langdale Pikes (Pike o'Stickle, Harrison Stickle, Thunacar Knott). North-east to Sergeant Man. South to Rossett Pike, Bowfell (902 m), Three Tarns, Crinkle Crags (859 m), Red Tarn, Pike o'Blisco (705 m). Descent via the Band back to Old Dungeon Ghyll.
Getting there & logistics
Base: Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Great Langdale. Bus from Ambleside (regular service).
Best time: April to October.
Safety
Crinkle Crags has several confusing descents in mist. Bowfell is exposed. In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. Langdale/Ambleside MRT. Pre-register SMS 999.
