About North Wales Pilgrim's Way

In medieval times, three pilgrimages to Bardsey Island were considered equal to one to Rome — the island, known as the Island of 20,000 Saints, was a major pilgrimage destination in the Celtic church. The North Wales Pilgrim's Way follows the ancient routes pilgrims used to reach it, crossing the length of North Wales from the Dee Estuary to the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula.

For trail runners it is a four to six day challenge crossing varied terrain: the limestone hills of the Clwydian Range, the upland moorland of the Llŷn approaches, and the clifftop coastal path along the peninsula itself. The route ends at Aberdaron, from where boats cross to Bardsey in good weather.

The route

Bagillt to Rhuddlan (~35 km): Along the Dee Estuary and the Clwydian hills fringe.

Rhuddlan to Clynnog Fawr (~80 km): Cross the upland spine of North Wales via Bangor and the Llŷn approach roads.

Clynnog Fawr to Aberdaron (~35 km): The Llŷn coast path — the finest section. Neolithic sites, sea cliffs and the pilgrim church at Aberdaron.

Getting there & logistics

Start: Bagillt. Bus from Flint (train from Chester).

Finish: Aberdaron and optional Bardsey crossing (weather-dependent boat service from Aberdaron).

Best time: May to September. The Llŷn coast is excellent in summer.

Safety

The Llŷn coast path section involves cliff-top paths. The Bardsey crossing is weather-dependent — check with the boat operators. In an emergency: call 999 or 112. For coastal incidents: ask for Coastguard. Pre-register SMS 999.
