About Scafell Skyline

The Scafell group is the highest ground in England, and the Scafell Skyline makes the most of it — a circuit of the complete massif from Wasdale Head that takes in all the significant summits. The circuit includes the technical Mickledore crossing between Scafell Pike and Scafell — a short but serious scramble — and gives an unrivalled view of the surrounding Lake District.

At around 35 km with approximately 2,800 m of ascent, it is achievable in four to eight hours for fell runners. The views from Scafell Pike (978 m) and Scafell (964 m) on a clear day extend to Ireland, the Isle of Man, Wales and Scotland.

The route

Wasdale Head to Scafell Pike: The standard approach via Lingmell and the Corridor Route. Broad Crag (934 m) and Ill Crag (930 m) visited en route.

Scafell Pike to Scafell via Mickledore: The crux. Mickledore is a narrow col with a short, steep scramble down to Scafell. Foxes Tarn is an alternative descent line.

Scafell to Wasdale: Down the south ridge of Scafell to Burnmoor Tarn and back to Wasdale Head.

Getting there & logistics

Base: Wasdale Head. Remote valley with limited access — single-track road from Gosforth (bus from Whitehaven or Ravenglass, then taxi). National Trust campsite.

Best time: May to October. The Scafells carry snow into April most years.

Safety

Mickledore between Scafell Pike and Scafell is the most technical section — loose rock and exposure, more serious in the wet. Lord's Rake is an alternative but has its own hazards. Both summits are high, cold and exposed. In an emergency: call 999 or 112, ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. Wasdale MRT. Pre-register SMS 999.
