About Severn Way

The River Severn rises on the slopes of Plynlimon in the Cambrian Mountains and flows 354 km to the sea — through Shrewsbury, Worcester, Gloucester and the tidal bore country of the Severn Estuary. The Severn Way follows it the full length on a mix of riverside paths, towpaths and countryside routes.

For trail runners it is a week-long challenge covering enormous variety: remote Welsh upland, market town England, cathedral cities and the dramatic tidal estuary. The Severn Bore (a tidal wave that rushes up the river at certain tides) and the Severn bridges are the spectacular engineering moments.

The route

Source (Plynlimon) to Shrewsbury (~120 km): Upper Severn through mid-Wales and the Shropshire plains. Montgomery, Welshpool.

Shrewsbury to Worcester (~110 km): Through Bridgnorth and the Severn Valley Railway country. Good towpath running.

Worcester to Bristol (~130 km): Past Gloucester (cathedral), the Bore country at Minsterworth, and the Severn bridges to the sea.

Getting there & logistics

Start: Plynlimon/Hafren Forest (car required — limited access). Train to Machynlleth, then bus/taxi.

Finish: Severn Beach. Train to Bristol.

Best time: May to October. The upper section can be very boggy.

Safety

The Plynlimon source area is remote Welsh upland with no paths and limited mobile signal. The tidal estuary sections require care — the Severn has the second highest tidal range in the world. In an emergency: call 999 or 112. For estuary incidents ask for Coastguard.
