About this route
A 14.4km loop from Hurst Green through the Ribble Valley, along the rivers Ribble and Hodder past Stonyhurst College, where Tolkien wrote. Gentle riverside and pasture running in a landscape said to have shaped Middle-earth.
Hazards & notes
The riverside floods after heavy rain and the meadows hold mud, so the low path can be soft or impassable in spate. The Ribble and Hodder are powerful when high, so take care at the confluence.
Emergency
Call 999 or 112 → ask for Police → request Mountain Rescue. Register Emergency SMS: text "register" to 999.
