Cardiff Outdoor Group have run the South Wales Three Peaks Trial every March since 1963, which makes it the oldest challenge walk in the country. It was designed to test endurance and map reading, and still does: four routes over Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid from Abergavenny, with Longtown Mountain Rescue on the summit checkpoints and half the proceeds going to them.

Four routes from Abergavenny: the twenty-mile Gold over Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid, the seventeen-mile linear Platinum from Llanthony over Bal Mawr and Pen Cerrig-calch, a fifteen-mile Silver and a ten-mile Bronze. Map reading essential. Since 1963.
