What you’re in for
Four routes from the Guide Hall in Abergavenny on a Saturday in March: the twenty-mile Gold over Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and the Skirrid with 1,524m of climb; the seventeen-mile linear Platinum from Llanthony over Bal Mawr and Pen Cerrig-calch; a fifteen-mile Silver and a ten-mile Bronze. Map reading essential, twelve hours for all of them, and it has run since 1963 — one of the oldest challenge events in Britain.
Terrain and trail
Three separate mountains and the valleys between: steep grass and bracken on the Skirrid and Sugar Loaf, heather and peat on Blorenge's plateau, canal towpath and lane linking them, and March mud in the fields. Exposed on the tops. A trail shoe with grip.
