What you’re in for
Ten, twenty or forty miles over the Black Mountains from Crickhowell in early March: 16.9km with 468m of climb and five hours, 32.5km with 1,360m and eight, or 65km with 2,720m and sixteen. A marked course, and the first of the two Beasts — the Beacons follow six weeks later, for anyone doing both.
Terrain and trail
Lane and field path out of Crickhowell, then the long grassy ridges of the Black Mountains — whaleback tops, peat and heather, steep sides — with forest track in the valleys between. March up there can be snow. Marked. A trail shoe with grip.
