What you’re in for
Abergavenny Castle to Llangadog on the Beacons Way, the national park's own trail: over the Skirrid and the Black Mountains, past the ruins at Llanthony, across the central Beacons and Pen y Fan at 886 m, and out into the Carmarthen Fans. You navigate it yourself. A hardcopy map is mandatory, either OS Explorer OL12 and OL13, Harvey XT25 East and West, or the Beacons Way Ultra map, and the compass has to be a real one rather than the app on your phone. Ten checkpoints, forty hours, and 6,143 m of climb.
