What you’re in for
Fifty miles from Ellesmere Port, starting on canal towpath before turning into the old woodland of Delamere Forest and out onto the Sandstone Trail to Frodsham and Helsby Hill. Well marked and straightforward to follow, with 849m of climb on the organiser's figures (670m on the GPX), seven checkpoints and seventeen hours from a six o'clock start on the last Saturday in February. One of GB Ultras' flatter fifties and a common first hundred-kilometre-ish step for people in the North West.
Terrain and trail
Towpath — flat, firm, puddled in February — then forest road and sandy track through Delamere, and the sandstone ridge itself: rocky steps, rooty woodland path and short sharp climbs onto Helsby and Frodsham hills. Mud in the woods. A road shoe with tread or a light trail shoe.
