What you’re in for
The summer Excalibur races start from the Coed Moel Famau car park: a marathon with about 1,676m of ascent, a half with 975m and a 10k with 518m. All summit Moel Famau and the Jubilee Tower; the marathon also follows Offa's Dyke along the Clwydian ridge and visits several Iron Age hillforts on a northern loop beyond Aifft. Courses are signed and marshalled, but you get a map and must carry full waterproofs, hat, gloves, compass, whistle and your own bottle. The only cut-off is 14:00 at Aifft, around 13 miles into the marathon; anyone later is sent back on a route about 3 miles shorter. Food and a local brewery bar wait at the finish.
