What you’re in for
Pickering to Whitby, fifty kilometres past eight railway stations along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the Esk Valley Walk, with 3,322 ft of climb and mainly undulating going. Much of it runs alongside the line, so a steam train going past is part of the day. Five marshalled checkpoints — water, flapjack, sweets, vegan sausage rolls — and thirteen hours.
