New Year's Day from the Leggers Inn at Dewsbury: twenty-one, thirteen or ten miles, all meeting at one main checkpoint so you can lengthen or shorten on the day, and a hair of the dog at the end. Everything back by five. An LDWA challenge event, which means walkers and runners together, a route description to navigate by rather than tape, checkpoints with food and drink, and a meal at the end. Entry is through the LDWA's own system, places are limited, and the ones in this list tend to fill early.

Canal towpath, field path and the hills around Dewsbury and the Calder — a mix of firm and January-muddy. A trail shoe.
