What you’re in for

Coverack to Perranporth Airfield along the whole arc of the Cornish coast in January: 171.6km on the GPX with 4,851m of climb (the organiser quotes 173km and 5,507m), from a one o'clock Friday start with 37 hours to finish, which puts two nights on the coast path for most of the field. Round the Lizard by Kynance Cove, past Penzance and Land's End, Cape Cornwall, Botallack and Zennor Head, across the Hayle estuary and the dunes at Mexico Towans, over Godrevy Head and on to the airfield. Aid stations at regular intervals with hot food at the big ones, one 30-litre drop bag, a full winter kit list, and a recommended UTMB index of 380 just to be confident of making the cut-offs. Extra waymarking on the coast path's own acorn signs, but you navigate.

Terrain and trail

The South West Coast Path in its worst month: cliff-top path with hundreds of steep steps, rocky headland, bog on the Lizard, deep sand through the towans — the Dunes of Doom are the organiser's name, and earned — and Atlantic wind and rain for hours of darkness. Difficult, steep and arduous in places, in the organiser's words. A trail shoe with grip, and the kit list is a survival list.
