What you’re in for
A marathon from Wensum Park in Norwich and a half from Whitwell & Reepham station, both along Marriott's Way — the old railway line to Aylsham — and both finishing at the Friendship Hall in Aylsham. The marathon goes at half past eight and the half at ten, on the third Sunday in February, with eight and four hours respectively, water every 11km or so and sweets at halfway. Largely traffic-free, with the road crossings marshalled or signed, and the distances approximate because the course has not been measured for records. Beginner-friendly, and one of the flattest trail marathons in the country.
Terrain and trail
Old railway trackbed for almost the whole way: compacted gravel and cinder, some tarmac near Norwich, puddled and soft in a wet February, with the old station platforms for landmarks. Flat. A road shoe with tread.
