What you’re in for
Three distances along the Suffolk coast and marshes, all finishing at Nicholas Everitt Park on Oulton Broad in mid-May. The 50 mile starts there at half past seven and heads out on the Angles Way along Carlton Marshes to Beccles, then south on the East Suffolk Line walk to Holton, Blythburgh, the Sandlings Walk and the coast path back north; fifteen hours. The 50km starts at Holton village hall at half past eight and takes in Blythburgh's Holy Trinity church, Walberswick, Southwold, Dunwich, Covehithe and Kessingland; ten hours. The trail marathon starts at Walberswick at half past nine, loops Walberswick and runs the coast to Southwold and on; eight hours. Four to six checkpoints per race, in village halls and pubs.
Terrain and trail
Marsh path and river wall on the Broads, heath and forest track on the Sandlings, and the Suffolk coast path — cliff-top, shingle and beach, with the crumbling cliffs at Covehithe and the soft sand the slowest part. Flat, exposed to the wind off the sea, and firm in May away from the shingle. A road shoe with tread, or a light trail shoe.
