What you’re in for
Lowestoft seafront to the Moot Hall at Aldeburgh along the Suffolk Coast Path — Southwold, Dunwich, Sizewell, Thorpeness — 51.5km with 134m of climb, which makes it about as flat as an ultra gets. Half past eight in mid-September from Kensington Gardens, nine hours, four checkpoints at Benacre, Reydon, Dunwich church and Sizewell. Point to point, so plan the transport back. Marked with orange arrows and ribbon, marshals on the road crossings.
Terrain and trail
Promenade, sea wall, quiet lane, heath and forest path, and stretches of beach — the shingle and soft sand are the only hard going on the whole route, and after a dry summer the sandy heath tracks are quick. Exposed to the wind off the North Sea. Marked. A road shoe with tread, or a light trail shoe.
