What you’re in for
Berkhamsted Castle to Hampden Meadow in Wendover along the Ridgeway: through the Ashridge estate to Ivinghoe Beacon, then Coombe Hill and Whiteleaf before the loop back into Wendover. 50.4km on the GPX — the organiser notes the current route runs about a kilometre long because of HS2 closures — with 972m of climb, a nine o'clock start in mid-April and nine hours. Three checkpoints at 14, 30 and 42km, with extra water points if it turns hot. Marked with orange arrows and ribbon and marshalled at the awkward turns; the kit list is light, but the GPX is compulsory.
Terrain and trail
Chalk ridge and beech wood: firm flinty track along the escarpment, rooty woodland path through Ashridge, steep grassy climbs onto Ivinghoe Beacon, Coombe Hill and Whiteleaf, and the organiser's own warning that it goes slippery and muddy in the wet. April can be either. Marked. A trail shoe.
