What you’re in for
The first 60km of the Ridgeway, Ivinghoe Beacon to the Ridgeway View campsite near Wallingford, 1,004m of climb — the organiser's pick for the trail's best scenery, with the ridgeline views and beech woods of the Chilterns. Half past eight on the late May bank holiday Saturday, ninety minutes before the full Challenge sets off from the same spot, ten hours. Four checkpoints at Wendover church, Whiteleaf, Aston Rowant and Nuffield. The trail's own signposts plus the organiser's extra markers on the vague bits; you carry the route on your watch or phone regardless.
Terrain and trail
The Chiltern half of the Ridgeway: chalk escarpment, flinty ridge track and beech-wood single-track, with the steep grassy pulls onto Coombe Hill and Whiteleaf and a long gentle descent to the Thames at the end. Firm in late May, muddy in the woods after rain. A trail shoe.
