What you’re in for
A half marathon on the Ridgeway between Coombe Hill above Wendover and Whiteleaf Hill by Princes Risborough, with a loop of the Whiteleaf nature reserve in the middle: 21.1km with 514m of climb, which is a lot for a half, and entirely off road. Ten o'clock on a Sunday in early July from the Shoulder of Mutton in Wendover, finishing in Hampden Meadow, four hours. One checkpoint at Green Hailey that you pass twice, at 8.5 and 11.5km. Marked with orange arrows and ribbon, marshals on the road crossings.
Terrain and trail
Chalk escarpment and beech wood: the steep grassy climb onto Coombe Hill, flinty track along the ridge, rooty woodland single-track and the pitched steps at Whiteleaf. Firm in July, uneven throughout. Marked. A trail shoe.
