What you’re in for
Both routes start in Talybont-on-Usk at ten in the morning and head straight into the hills, with the Beacons opening up behind you as you climb: a 51K with 2,184m of ascent and twelve hours, and a 24K with 667m and six. Reservoir, forestry and open ridge, out towards the flat-topped summits of Pen y Fan and Cribyn, with two cupless aid stations and a proper mandatory kit list — taped waterproof, foil blanket, whistle, GPX loaded. Early August. Welsh mountain running proper: the climbing is the race, and the views are the reason people come back.
Terrain and trail
Reservoir track and forest road out of Talybont, then the mountain: steep grassy climbs, peaty moorland plateau, stone-pitched path on the popular summits and rough, exposed ridge between them. Wet underfoot even in August, and the tops make their own weather. Marked by the volunteers, but carry the GPX. A trail shoe with grip.
