What you’re in for
The whole island coastal path in one go from Chale: west along the southern cliffs, past the Needles and up to Cowes for halfway, then round the east side through Ventnor and back — 106km with about 1,800m of climb on the organiser's figures. Or half of it, either half being 52 to 54km; a 50km southern loop with most of the cliff in it; 25km quarters; and a ten-mile at Cowes. Early May, through Saturday night for the continuous distance. An Ultra Challenge event, which means walkers, joggers and runners on the same course, signed with pink arrows and glow sticks after dark, with a covered rest stop every twelve kilometres or so — food, drink, medics, toilets — and a bigger one every twenty-five. Runners can enter with a target time; most of the field will be walking.
Terrain and trail
Chalk cliff-top path along the south and west, with the climbs onto the downs behind the Needles and the broken ground of the Undercliff; then seafront, esplanade and lane round the flatter north and east. Firm in May, but chalk is slippery the moment it rains. Signed. A trail shoe.
